Geriatric nursing is a specialized field of nursing focused on the care of older adults, emphasizing the management of chronic conditions, prevention of disease, and promotion of overall health and well-being (National Institute on Aging, 2023). Nurses with advanced education and training in geriatric care are better equipped to address the complex health needs of elderly patients. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yola, provides care to a significant number of elderly individuals who suffer from multiple comorbidities and require specialized nursing care.
Geriatric nursing education equips nurses with knowledge on age-related changes, common diseases in older adults, palliative care, and strategies for improving the quality of life for elderly patients (Bello & Adeyemi, 2024). However, despite the importance of this education, there is limited research on how it affects the quality of care provided to elderly patients at FMC, Yola. This study seeks to examine the impact of geriatric nursing education on the quality of elderly care provided by nurses at FMC, Yola, and determine how well-prepared nurses are to meet the needs of this vulnerable population.
Although the importance of specialized training for geriatric care is widely recognized, the impact of geriatric nursing education on the quality of elderly care at FMC, Yola, has not been comprehensively studied. Nurses may lack adequate training in geriatric care, leading to suboptimal management of elderly patients and reduced patient satisfaction (Ogundipe et al., 2023). Without assessing the effectiveness of geriatric nursing education, it is difficult to determine whether it translates into better patient outcomes, particularly for elderly patients with complex health needs.
This study aims to evaluate how geriatric nursing education impacts the quality of care for elderly patients at FMC, Yola, and identify areas for further improvement in training and care practices.
This study will focus on nurses at FMC, Yola, and their level of training in geriatric care, as well as the impact of this training on the quality of care provided to elderly patients. Limitations may include variations in individual nurses’ learning experiences and challenges in measuring the direct impact on patient outcomes.
